Nieuw Ruin

Wrapped by the sprawling verandah of a building with nearly 150 years of history, Nieuw Ruin is a small bar and eatery filled with three tonnes of reclaimed jarrah, two charcoal grills and more independent, small-batch booze than you can poke a stick at.

You’ll find head chef Blaze Young indulging her passion for super fresh, hyper-local produce with a menu that is designed to seamlessly shift from relaxed snacks at the bar into a generous dinner at our custom-built communal tables.

Beyond the kitchen, Nieuw Ruin's pride and joy is an eclectic and expansive beverage offering. A seasonal cocktail menu drawing from the local connections forged by the kitchen, interweaving native produce and small-batch spirits. A real pick-n-mix lolly bag of a wine list that’s 300+ bottles strong, full of weird and wonderful wines from boutique, independent producers near and far. Beers spanning from crispy-clean lagers through to nerdy, hop-laden crafties, as well as some top-notch non-alcoholic options to boot.

It’s simple. Delicious things done well, served to you by some of Freo’s most talented hospo faces.

What people are saying:

"Perfectly charcoal-grilled rainbow trout over confit leeks smothered in herby, oniony white-wine cream sauce might play it straighter, but it’s proof that sure-handed technique and good sense never fall out of fashion." (Top 100 restaurants (2024), The West Australian Good Food Guide)
