Manjaree Walking Trail

Walk the Manjaree trail at Arthur Head Reserve, part of the Nyoongar coastal trail which stretches across Western Australia, to discover the significance of the area’s Aboriginal history.

Discover one of Fremantle's most culturally significant coastal walks along the Manjaree Walking Trail, a self-guided experience that connects visitors with the rich Aboriginal and maritime history of Manjaree/Bathers Beach and Arthur Head.

“Kya Wanju Nichia Nyoongar wardan bidi, winjalla gnulla kaatidj bal gwabbanijow.” (This is the Nyoongar coastal trail, where our knowledge is put right.

Named after the Whadjuk Noongar word Manjaree, meaning "fair exchange", the area was an important meeting, trading and gathering place for Whadjuk Noongar people long before European settlement. Interpretive signage along the trail shares stories of Noongar culture, seasonal knowledge, bush foods, trade and the enduring connection of Whadjuk people to Walyalup (Fremantle).

The trail passes some of Fremantle's most iconic heritage landmarks, including the Round House, Western Australia's oldest surviving public building. Perched on Arthur Head above Manjaree/ Bathers Beach, the Round House offers sweeping ocean views and insight into the early history of the Swan River Colony.  Time your walk to hear the daily 1pm cannon firing!

Arthur Head is a Class A reserve that holds deep social, spiritual, and cultural significance for the Nyoongar people as well as heritage significance for the geological value of its ancient limestone headland, its connection to Australia’s earliest inhabitants, and its role in Fremantle’s post-settlement history.

Visitors can also walk through the historic Whalers Tunnel, carved through the limestone headland in 1837 to provide direct access between the town and the beach below. Originally built to support Fremantle's whaling industry, the tunnel remains one of the city's most distinctive heritage features and a memorable stop along the route.

Combining stunning coastal scenery, significant heritage sites and powerful Aboriginal storytelling, the Manjaree Walking Trail offers a deeper understanding of the people, cultures and histories that have shaped Fremantle for thousands of years.
