Soft Spot @ Nyisztor Studio

28 January 2025
Soft Spot is three artists' exploration of infatuation and emotional vulnerability as represented in corporeal form and setting.

On the 15th of February three Boorloo artists launch „Soft Spot‟ at Nyisztor Studio, Fremantle; a blend of confronting and comforting imagery of the body. „Soft Spot‟ studies the connective tissue binding sentimental memory with bodily reality, bringing what the body remembers in to a visual medium.

Experiences move our flesh and bone as much as it does our heart and mind. Each of the three artists contribute their distinct style, producing a boldly accentuated yet cohesive contrast of works in painting, installation, and sculpture. The narratives of „Soft Spot‟ play out across these media, recounting those experiences we struggle to discard, for better or worse.

Xavier Turisini contorts traditional forms with deliberate geometry to create balanced corporeal melodrama. Tension and weight disform the distantly recogniseable, the resulting uncanny composition concurrently tugging familiarity and aversion.

Stef Rae explores and pushes the textural boundaries of paint, creating a diverse range of artworks engaging in narratives between reality and imagination. Beginning paintings in abstraction and allowing the work to develop its own form, Stef brings subconscious and conscious elements together into realised themes of dream-like obscurity, strength, and identity.

Adam Hisham Ismail is an Egyptian/Australian visual and sound artist whose practice echoes the mechanics and broken narratives of dreams and the elastic nature of memory. Mediating an uneasy conversation where the familiar and the strange intersect, his work has been described as “an anticipation of sound and kinesis”.
Using flagrant pageantry, animal archetypes and idiolectic mythology, Ismail creates a series of formal and conceptual conundrums which invite the audience to construct their own narratives.
