HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2026: Backflip in Time - Circus at the old Electrical Substation

12 March 2026
Explore circus skills while learning about life in the 1930s.

CircusWA has developed a new circus training facility in Fremantle's old electrical substation. Come join us for a free weekend of circus explorations inside this historic building. Three free workshops will be interspersed with historic stories about the old Substation and what circus life in 1930s Australia was like.

Guest speakers will be:
• Derek Nannup, Noongar Leader, Actor, and Clown, will entertain you with stories of a famous Australian circus family from the 1930s called Colleano's All Star Circus, a First Nations family who went to America to find fame and fortune.
• Nellie Simpson, Circus Artist and Director, will intrigue you with stories from Uglieland, a 1930s Carnival which was set up near the Fremantle Train Station and eventually closed because of 'unsavoury' social activities.
• Phillip Griffiths, Heritage Architect, will share the building's original purpose, its subsequent transformations and the role it played in the development of the city.

Workshops (1hr): 12pm, 1.30pm & 3pm
Heritage Talks: 1pm & 2.30pm

The Circus Substation was developed with funding from Lotterywest.

CircusWA's programs are supported by the City of Fremantle and the State Government of WA through the Department of CITS.
