Samson House

Take a guided tour and peek into the lives of an early Fremantle family.

Samson House is located in Walyalup (Fremantle) on Whadjuk Noongar Country.

This impressive home was built in 1888 for Michael Samson, who, after a life of adventure – and often misadventure!  - when on to become an active member of local Fremantle politics and , ultimately, Mayor of Fremantle from 1905 to 1907.

Michael was the son of Lionel Samson, who arrived in Western Australia abroad the Calista in 1829 with his brother, William. This earlier generation of Samson brothers established a liquor import-export that continues today.

Samson House tours allow for a maximum of five participants and is open on the first Sunday and third Wednesday of the month (unless it coincides with New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day). Please note that bookings are essential and guided tour times are set, do make sure you plan ahead to avoid disappointment.

Important information

  • Ensure your plans will allow you to arrive on time. Due to the nature of the tours, tours will start on time so latecomers cannot be accepted.
  • Large bags, prams, umbrellas or other bulky items cannot be taken into the building.

  • Refunds on tickets will not be provided for change of mind. To reschedule your visit, contact trust@ntwa.com.au.
  • Samson House will close if the Bureau of Meteorology forecast for Fremantle is 38 degrees or above. You will be able to use your tickets on another day or request a refund.
