Lorraine Daylight paints the Country of her family through the rich ochres of the East Kimberley. Guided by senior Warmun artists Jack Britten, Hector Jandany, and her father Gordon Barney, Lorraine continues the celebrated Warmun painting tradition grounded in Ngarranggarni — the Dreaming creation stories of Country.
Much of Lorraine’s inspiration comes from Ngarrgooroon on Texas Downs Station, where ancestral stories remain embedded in the landscape. She also paints Birnoo on Alice Downs Station, Country inherited through her paternal grandmother and learned through journeys with her father, who worked the region as a stockman. These travels shaped Lorraine’s connection to place, culture, and storytelling.
The Country itself provides the materials for painting. Rich ochre deposits gathered during trips on Country become the colours of Lorraine’s works — earth transformed into story, memory, and living cultural expression.
Presented in association with Warmun Art Centre, this exhibition will be on display at Japingka Gallery from 12 June – 12 July 2026.
Also showing are works by senior East Kimberley artists including Freddie Timms, Queenie McKenzie, Jack Britten, Rover Thomas, Gordon Barney, and Hector Jandany.
