Cloud Forest, Unfolding presents contemporary barkcloth paintings by Ömie women artists from the remote rainforests of Oro Province, Papua New Guinea.
Made from natural bark and decorated with intricate patterns, colours and designs drawn from the rainforest environment, Ömie barkcloths carry stories of Country, ancestry and cultural identity.
Passed from mother to daughter through an unbroken matrilineal tradition, barkcloth painting remains a vital form of cultural knowledge and expression. This exhibition brings together works by respected elders and contemporary Ömie artists, revealing an ancient tradition that continues to evolve today.
