From the hills in Mandoon/Guildford to the sea in Walyalup/Fremantle this is your invitation to be part of Perth Festival. Join us by the river, under the stars, every night of the Festival for a free, open-air sound and light installation co-created by First Nations artists with guidance from Nan Vivienne 'Binyarn' Hansen.
Lighting fires along the banks of the Derbarl Yerrigan is a practice that has existed for many years and had many purposes – welcoming people to Country, providing light, safety and warmth. Karla Bidi continues this practice, welcoming you to be part of Perth Festival in places you feel connected to. It pays homage to this place and the bilya that has such importance to Noongar people but is shared by us all.
Created by First Nations artists Ilona McGuire, Jacob Nash, Chloe Ogilvie and Ian Moopa Wilkes, under the guidance of Noongar Elders including Vivienne 'Binyarn' Hansen, Karla Bidi is a powerful and poetic installation transforming the Derbarl Yerrigan/Swan River and Djarlgarro/Canning River into a glowing pathway of 11 beacons stretching from Fremantle to Guildford.
Discover a series of single large-scale sculptures placed along the bilya, each accompanied by a new evocative soundscape that draws you in and invites you to take a moment to pause, to imagine and to contemplate.
Explore the trail of illuminating beacons and discover sounds and stories of the stars location in an experience that will touch hearts gently yet profoundly.
After dark until late.
